The prohibition of alcohol in Canada arose in various stages, local municipal bans started in the late 19th century, provincial bans followed in the early 20th century, to national prohibition (a temporary wartime measure) from 1918 to 1920.
This cartoon illustrates how alcohol was seen as something evil which needed to be stopped. Alcohol is dangerous and harms people therefore something must be done about it, right?
People believed that banning alcohol was the right thing to do in order to solve their problems. They thought they would be better people, and better Christians. Many believed that it would help to focus on winning the war. On the other hand many men did not see alcohol as a distraction or as a problem of any sort.
